And The World Is Good Again

For the first time in three days, I have heat in my house. And I’m doing a happy dance right now.

Not having heat sucks when it’s ten degrees outside.

The furnace gave up the ghost on Monday. It’s an oil burner, so I assumed we ran out of oil. We shouldn’t have, as I put a lot of oil in it not too long ago. I grabbed some cans and headed out in pursuit of heating oil. I easily defeated the oil and took it home as a prize. I dumped it in the tank and headed for the heat switch.

Nothing.

Well, maybe the filters need changed. So I changed them.

Nothing.

Alright. Maybe the pump went out. I gave it a brand new shiny pump.

Nothing. Dammit!

The new pump was pumping strong. The filters were new and there was oil.
Burn, baby, burn!

Nothing! Double dammit!

I decided to look at the filter. It was full of mud. Mud? That’s not good, as the tank is underground. I looked into the damn tank. It was clean and full of oil, but the filter was getting mud.

I reacted calmly, logically and sensibly. I screamed at the stupid thing. I told it to do whatever it wanted to, I would NOT be defeated. The Gods hate me, I reasoned. I tried Mel Gibson's advice, I hated them back. For a full hour!

Nothing!

Fine. So it's like that?

I’ll buy a new tank. I’ll buy new lines. And as God is my witness, we shall have heat again!

So the new tank is in place. Brand new shiny copper lines go to that stupid furnace. Everything is in place. Nothing can go wrong now, right? Yeah, right. My hand on the switch, I told it to give me it's best. I can take it. I know it's coming.

I hit the switch. And we have heat. At long last, heat!

I’m even starting to feel my toes again. I think I’ll have a beer and celebrate.
Make that two beers.

That's cold!

And yeah, so's the beer.

You know what I like best about winter in Ohio?

Me neither!

One of the guys from the shop, who thought he could do a better job than me, put the new pump on the furnace for me. He knows everything and doesn't need any stupid instructions.

So he put it on backwards and destroyed not only the new pump, but the burner blower and the motor that runs both of them.

Now we have no heat until Monday at the soonest.

I'd even mentioned to him, as he threw away the instructions, that 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing'.
Don't you just love people who want to do favors for you?

I'm still thinking.

I'm leaning toward yes, so long as it doesn't involve a furnace.
