Tips For All Boaters This Holiday

The one thing we all cringe at and often fear is getting boarded by the authorities. Each country is different, but in the U.S., there are several things you can do to make it a more pleasant experience.

Lay out fenders so they can come alongside.
Have your identification and registration ready.
Point out the required equipment.
Leave the fire extinguishers in their approved brackets (they are not approved if not in the bracket)
Your throwable device should be close to the helm and have a readable tab with the USCG approval number on it.
Adequate numbers, types and appropriate size life jackets should be easy to reach, in good condition, out of the plastic packaging and have legible USCG approval numbers on them.
If you have a toilet or Porta-Potti on board, make sure you have the system in appropriate order.
If a Y-valve is installed, it better be in the correct position, or it could cost you dearly.
Last of all, be pleasant and respectful to the officers and the situation.

No one wants to get boarded, but the easier you make things for the authorities, the faster they'll get off, and you'll be on your way in no time.
