A Fungus Among Us

From Sweet.

As I write this article Eddie is still fighting…he is a real trooper. If you have animals please read and take to heart each word; protect the ones you love. This not only applies to dogs and cats….but people too.

ANY mushrooms you see ~ consider them to be poisonous and do not let your dog near.
Remove them immediately!

Put on a pair of disposable gloves and remove by breaking the stem as far down to the ground as you can - discard in the trash where no animal can get to it, throw away the gloves and wash your hands well.

They pop up everywhere - in yards, in the woods, in parks, alongside roads . . . and in salad bars. Some dogs, like some people, like to eat them. They can be a gourmet delicacy . . . or deadly poisonous. They are mushrooms.

Currently, Eddie is suffering the following:
1. Gastrointestinal upset.
2. Muscarinic signs, plus depression and lethargy.
3. Severe bouts of vomiting.
4. The mushrooms destroy the liver, causing the dog to develop jaundice (the whites of the eyes and mucous membranes turn yellow.)
5. Because the liver produces blood-clotting factors, bleeding disorders can develop. Seizures occur due to the liver damage.

The most deadly syndrome has a delayed onset of greater than six hours and up to 20 hours post-ingestion. Without prompt, aggressive treatment, this syndrome is often fatal.

I am sad to say Eddie has reached level five…but I continue to pray for my little guy…Casey, Eddie’s sister by adoption…has finally realize he has been gone for more than just a day…she searches for him…looks in his bed….looks at the door…and finally tonight she decided to lay on his favorite blanket…and she skipped dinner…

Humans may be given liver transplants, but this is not an option for dogs.

The death cap (Amanita Phalloides) is the mushroom most likely to cause this syndrome.

I am praying for a good report tomorrow….if not…I will have to make a decision as to let him go…or bring him home and see if he just needs us now…
