Seattle woman rejects $1M and stays put
SEATTLE (UPI) -- An 86-year-old Seattle woman is a neighborhood hero for refusing $1 million to leave the house she bought more than 50 years ago to make way for development. Edith Mace's 108-year-old house is now surrounded by a construction site, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. She says she rejected an offer of $1 million for the property. "I don't want to move," she told the newspaper. "I don't need the money. Money doesn't mean anything." When Macefield bought the house for her mother in 1955, the Ballard neighborhood was a Scandinavian outpost of neat small houses occupied by blue-collar workers. Now the other houses are gone and a retail complex and parking garage is rising around her. She said she does not mind the construction noise. When it gets too bad, she turns up the volume on her television or plays opera recordings.
