No holes barred at outhouse auction
GREENVILLE, Ill. (UPI) -- Managers of a rural Illinois farm heritage museum were flush with success Monday after auctioning off all 12 unusual donated outhouses. Sherry Schaefer is the daughter of the American Farm Heritage Museum President Oliver Schaefer and the one who came up with the fundraising idea, the Belleville (Ill.) News Democrat reported. "I got to thinking about it, and I said, 'We'll have an outhouse festival!'" Schaefer said. The museum, in Greenville in western Illinois, sold off the custom made structures Saturday as about 300 people gathered to watch. Auctioneer Kurt Aumann joked and cajoled bidders to spend as much as $550 for the one-of-a-kind backhouses. One of the models was built to resemble a cow, while another was themed to a NASCAR racecar, with no door, but only a window to climb through, the report said. Another resembled a John Deere tractor. Jane Aumann, of the auction service, told UPI the event was a success, raising nearly $3,000 for the museum, which issued charitable tax donation receipts to those who purchased the never-used structures.
