Upside Down Christmas Trees
According to legend, the original Christmas tree was used as a symbol of religious devotion by Christian missionaries who used the evergreen to explain a basic religious tenet of the Trinity - God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They were originally hung upside down to make sure anyone who saw a tree in the house knew it was not just a floral decoration.
By the 12th century, the German people adopted the Fir Tree as "The Tree of God".
As the original religious meaning was lost, the trees began to be displayed upright with candles and other ornaments as a Christmas decoration.
The earliest historical record of an evergreen tree being decorated for Christmas can be traced back to Germany in 1521. Later, when German immigrants came to the Americas, they brought the tradition of the Christmas tree along with them.

Christmas Trees
The fir tree has a long association with Christianity, it began in Germany almost 1,000 years ago when St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of pagans worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and to his amazement a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith. But it was until the 16th century that fir trees were brought indoors at Christmas time.

Are male or female holly plants most often used in holiday decorating?

If you are decorating with holly that has red berries, then you are using pistillate "female" plants.

Is there any mistletoe etiquette?

Correct etiquette says that a person should pluck a berry from the mistletoe branch each time they kiss under it, and when there are no more berries left on the plant, there should be no more kissing.

Please note, if you are going to follow this suggestion, you should buy a larger bag of mistletoe this year.
